What It Looks Like

What it looks like.

Peace, that is.

Imagine you see a beautiful bird in nature, calm and still, with its gaze focused outward.

Zoom out.

You now see that the bird is perched confidently on a tree branch, occasionally blinking its eyes and shaking its body to remain dry against a veil of mist that regularly covers it, gaze focused forward.

Zoom out a little more.

You can now see more context - and the source of the mist. The bird is still firmly settled on a tree branch that is surrounded by a constant, aggressive, and thunderous waterfall on the edge of a mountain. The sound of the waterfall is all-encompassing, compounded by the mountain’s height and the volume of water falling. Nothing else can be heard. The mist and occasional blankets of water are unpredictable and thick, causing the bird to move and adjust its body in response.

While all of this is happening, the bird remains perched. Not unaware of its surroundings, but unbothered. Focused.

Steady, with its gaze looking forward. Off into the distance, on the horizon.

When I remain connected to Him, my peace is this steadfast. I am not silly enough to think I am the architect of this type of peace, however. There is much going on in our world that attempts to threaten our peace. It is not an easy task, but it is possible to seek, surrender and find the peace that surpasses all understanding.

May it be as regular and as abundant as that waterfall.
